1972 Lotus Elan Sprint FHC
Information provided by the Seller:
This is a 1972 Federal Model LHD Sprint FHC with a big valve
engine on Strombergs. It is located in Pakenham,
Ontario, Canada (about 45 minutes outside of Ottawa). The car
was bought from Sports Cars Unlimited in Clarkson, Ontario by
Canadian Medical Leasing, who leased it to Dr. John Kiskis, for
his wife Dr. Donna Vilis. Donna bought it out at the end of the
three year lease, and owned it until 1988, when I bought it from
her. Donna and I went to medical school together, and I had been
nstrumental in her husband's leasing of the vehicle. I had kept
an eye on the vehicle over the years, and when it became too much
of a challenge for her, she sold it to me.
The car was originally white, but Donna had the dealership
paint it British Racing Green in 1972. I returned it to the original
white in 1998, patched up the cracks in the gel coat, and rebuilt
the engine.
The car saw very few miles over the next few years and was
put in dry storage from 1990 to 1998 while I worked in the Middle
East. At present, it has 34125 miles. In the last two years, my
racing partner Ted Rance and I have extensively refurbished the
car.
- The frame has no rust on it.
- The gas tank has been epoxied inside and out.
- The dash has been refurbished, and
- there is a Spyder style roll bar with side intrusion bars.
- The headliner is new, as are the carpets.
- The master cylinders, fuel pump, generator, and carbs have
been rebuilt.
- The rear discs have been turned, while the front discs are
new.
- There are new pads, pistons, brake hoses and seals on all
four corners.
- The front end has new trunnion kits, upper ball joints, tie
rod ends, and shocks with two-way adjustable coil overs.
- There are new Koni inserts in the back.
- The door, window and boot rubbers are all new, as are the
exterior mirrors and the window felts.
- The speedometer, choke, throttle, parking brake and heater
control cables are new, as is the heater control valve.
- The clutch slave cylinder is new, along with the clutch disc
and
- new Sprint doughnuts.
- The hub seals are new on all four corners, and the rear hub
bearings are new.
- The transmission has new gaskets and seals,
- the engine has all new seals and gaskets, and
- the valves have just been reshimmed.
- compression is good in all cylinders.
All of the work has been done by a professional mechanic (Ted
Rance) who used to race an Elan.
Ted and I raced an Elan in the Canadian Auto Sport Club Ontario
and Quebec regions from 1982 to 1990. I am considering selling
this Elan to finance another racing effort. Selling it will still
leave me with two Elans, so I will not be completely bereft of
Lotuses.

------------------------------------------------------------
I was asked to inspect the car on behalf of someone and have
found the following;
- The body shell could be described as an older restoration.
- The pictures do not
do this car justice. It is better than the pictures.
- There are minor blemishes in the paint. Minimal spider cracks
in the very good base/clearcoat paint.
- Trunk has an extra layer of woven glass fibre applied - said
to have been added to reduce a drumming sound.
- The body shows no evidence of any accident damage or mismatched
paint
- Window rubber and door felts are in great shape
- The underside is painted with gravel guard and shows little,
if any, use.
- There is no rust visible on the chassis. (or anywhere else)
- Suspension arms are all straight with minimal chipped paint
- Brake disks appear to be relatively unused
- Brake hoses appear to be in excellent condition
- Suspension bushing & donuts appear to be fresh
- There are no leaks or weeping from anything on the car
- The engine starts well, with no smoke from the tailpipe,
settles to an even idle. When reved it settles quickly to an
even idle with no smoke from the engine.
- The engine bay is as it should be.
- Electrical wiring appears to be substantial with solid connectors.
- The interior shows little wear.
- The dash switches show their age and are chalky grey.
- The dash is in excellent shape with no delamination or checking.
Markings are clear and legible.
- All gauges seem to function.
- Tires are old and hard.
- The odometer shows 34,161 miles
Overall this is a substantial car. With only 2 owners, matching
numbers, fully documented history, only 34K miles and a substantial
investment of time and money by the present owner. This Lotus
Elan would make a great investment. Fixed Head Coups are not plentiful
and this would make a great addition to any garage. If I had the
space and the money, I would have bought this car.
Sincerely,
Harald Freise - all the usual disclaimers... no vested interest,
yada, yada, yada...
